A review of The black feathers
My review of The black feathers, a book by Rebecca Netley. This book was published in 2023. It’s available in most places, I listened to it on audible. I don’t really have the time to sit and read books these days, but I love listening to them as i’m doing chores around the house. This isn’t a book I would usually go for, I was given some books and this was in the pile. After reading the back of it, I decided to give it a listen, so downloaded it and put the book in my charity shop pile. I wish I would have kept it now!
What’s it about?
It is described as a gothic thriller and is set in the 1800s on the Yorkshire moors. Annie marries Edward Stonehouse and arrives on his estate on the Yorkshire moors. Edward was married previously and was widowed, just what happened to Edward’s wife?
Edwards sister Iris also lives at the house, a medium and a keen taxidermist. She explains to Annie that a black feather is a sign that a spirit has visited. Annie initially refuses to be drawn into Iris’s paranormal activities, but as time passes, she is no longer sure what she believes…
It has been described by others as immersive, eerie and a gothic tale full of mystery. Where ghosts tread, black feathers fall.
My thoughts on The black feathers
I’m not usually one for paranormal books, and things about ghosts. There was something that drew me to this book though. I’m ashamed to say, I read a book by it’s cover in this instance. It was enough to intrigue me and I was not disappointed.
Although not my usual kind of read, I thought this book was brilliant! It kept me guessing throughout, and had a fantastic twist at the end. With so many books these days I feel you can see the twist coming, but in this case, I really had no idea.
The main character Annie was relatable, and as the story went on I really wanted the best for her. There were tense moments as the story went on, and the writer created the atmosphere beautifully. I listen to all my books on audible, and this one had a good narrator too.
If you are looking for something that will keep you guessing and you like historic novels, then this could be for you.
