Recently my sister and I were planning a day out in London. When working out where to go, she mentioned Shrek’s adventure (affiliate link). Is Shrek’s adventure good? I had never been myself, but the kids had been with their Dad.
So I asked them, ‘is Shrek’s adventure good?’, ‘Would you like to go again?’. They both said they had fun and would like to go again. I had seen reviews online saying it only lasted an hour. For a price of between £50-60 for 3 of us, I wasn’t sure it would be worth it.That’s where our trust Merlin passes came in handy. Shrek’s adventure is included for Merlin pass holders.
We decided to make it a day out rather than heading to London for an hour. We also booked the London Eye and the SeaLife London (affiliate links)and make a day of it. Luckily all 3 of these are included with the Merlin passes.
Where is Shrek’s adventure?
Shrek’s adventure is in London, it’s on the south bank of the river Thames. It is super easy to get to by train. The venue recommends using public transport to get there, they do however, have a discount code available for parking should you want to drive there. Waterloo station is a 5 minute walk, as well as Westminster. It is also right next to both the London Eye and SeaLife London. It is also next to London dungeons. We weren’t sure if this was a good idea though. The kids are aged between 6 and 11 and we were unsure if it would be too scary. Let me know in the comments if you have taken children to the London dungeon and whether they found it scary 😳
What happens?
I had seen online that photography was not allowed inside which I think is a great way of keeping the surprise for people visiting. Due to that I wouldn’t want to give too much away.
You are led through the interactive adventure by wonderful actors. Be prepared – you may have to get involved! We quite often ended up at the front even when we tried not to! I’m pretty sure the group was sick of our family having to go up by the end of the session. There were a number of dreamworks statues at the end for photo opportunities. As well as a photo with the big man himself, Shrek of course.
There isn’t a cloakroom, this means you may end up carrying all your children’s worldly belongings round with you. You are also unable to take a pushchair on the tour, there is a buggy park at the beginning of the adventure. I would advise leaving any coats, jackets etc with the buggy to save carrying them around. On this note, the tour isn’t recommended for under 6’s, although it may be suitable for some under 6. The tour is accessible and permits one wheelchair user per tour, bear this in mind when booking.
The tour took just over an hour – our group did get lost in the mirror maze though! Make sure you use the toilets before starting the tour as there aren’t any available after that point.
The best bits
The bus ride was amazing! We all enjoyed it and would have loved to go on it a second time! All the actors were incredible, and you never would have guessed they had already repeated the routine several times that day.
The not so good bits
The only issue for us, was the same as many other attractions. The only way out is through the gift shop! This is of course full of irresistible toys, we managed to get all of ours out without having to part with a penny. The same can’t be said for SeaLife London though 🤣.
Was it good though?
When we left, we all said we couldn’t believe how good it was. We had heard mixed reviews, considering the first Shrek film came out over 20 years ago, would it still even be relevant? Needless to say, we all absolutely loved it. I’m pretty sure we would all go back again.
Having said that, the price does play a part in the deciding rating. Especially once you add in the cost of getting into London (I appreciate this depends where you live). If you have a Merlin pass or buy a multi-attraction ticket then it definitely somewhere you should visit. If not there are still a number of free things to do in the area and make a day out of it. The nearby Jubilee Gardens is a lovely park, well maintained and clean, but understandably busy! The Tate Modern is a 20 minute walk away and has free admission.
To sum up, yes! Shrek’s adventure is good!
